Course Overview

Brillouin microscopy is an emerging optical imaging technique for all-optical probing of mechanical properties in biological settings. Brillouin microscopy offers the ability to measure the mechanical properties of living biological systems, such as cells and organisms, noninvasively and contactless at high spatial resolution. This workshop aims at tutoring scientists on Brillouin microscopy and other optoacoustic tools used for biomedical research

Audience

This workshop is aimed at researchers and instrument developers who work in the field of Bio-Brillouin scattering spectroscopy and imaging and who wish to acquire more knowledge and hands-on training on this technology, with a special focus on SBS microscopy.

Modules/Resources

The school will give prominence to hands-on training on our instruments (see video of the previous edition below). Our facilities include a 6 pass Fabry-Perot interferometer (TFP, Table Stable), two VIPA-based interferometers (Light Machinery, 532 nm and 660 nm, one equipped with an environmental chamber), as well as a single stage VIPA designed for educational purposes. Training will also include demonstration of advanced control softwares for both TFP and VIPA interferometers. The training courses will be organized at the Institute for Light and Matter and at the Contact and Structural Mechanics Laboratory.
Practicals will be given by leading experts, including specialists from ThatEC, Light Machiney and Table Stable. We will demonstrate operation principles, basic and advanced alignment procedures, standard acquisitions and data processing. We will also show experiments on biological samples and complex fluids. A cell culture facility is available for basic sample preparation.

Learning Outcomes

You will gain an overview of Brillouin microscopy. You will gain an insight in their applications and pitfalls as well as recommendations from experts. You will meet top industrial actors that offer state-of-the-art solutions. After this course you should be able to assess the potential of these techniques and apply them to your own research.

Application

We hope to host up to 25 participants, so applicants will be selected. Early career researchers are strongly encouraged to participate. Motivation letter should include:

• Your relevant skills, experience and qualifications showing why you would be suitable for the course.
• Explanation of why you would like to attend, including what you can contribute and how you think you will benefit from the course.
• Career stage (master/PhD/postdoc/researcher)

Motivation letter length: The maximum limit of 2000 characters (ca. 200 words) refers to manually typed text (spaces included).

Applications should be sent to Thomas Dehoux and Jérémie Margueritat.
